Keyword Tips

Having the right keywords in your website content that web visitors will use to find you on the internet will play a major role in increasing your business. As everyone knows, more visitors mean more chances of buying customers and more business for you. And having the right keywords that your visitors will use to find what you are offering is critical.

It isn’t always easy, however, to narrow down the keywords that will work for you. If you use keywords that are too general in your website content, you will have too much competition for that particular keyword (or phrase) and may lose out to the major players on the web. Alternately, if you use keywords that are used too little, then you have no chance of increased visitors either. There should be a balance in there that you need discover.

Doing research to find out which keywords or keyword phrases will best work for you is an important task that you need to spend some time on. There are a few good tools available on the web that are useful in discovering this information. Both Google and Yahoo offer keyword search tools that allow you to insert the keyword or phrase you are thinking of targeting, and they return alternatives and suggestions for other keywords and phrases. These tools also give you an idea of how many people search using those keywords, and how much competition you may have for that chosen keyword. Wordtracker is also a good keyword search tool that you may want to consider.

Keywords and phrases that you may consider using should be on topic and as specific as possible with the web page you are trying to promote. If you have a website about dogs, your keywords should reflect the particular topic your website content is suggesting. For example, if you have an article entitled “Doga-Yoga for Dogs” on a web page on your dog website, your keyword or phrase should read something like ‘yoga for dogs’ or ‘dog exercise’ so that searchers will be directed to that particular subject.

Also, in today’s competitive keyword market, two, three or even four word phrases may work better for you. Typically, a one-word keyword has already been scooped up by the big companies and you may have too much competition for it. But, lesser known or longer phrases may put you at the top of the list for those keyword phrases. What you want to do is to be at the top of the list when searchers enter your keyword phrase so that they click on your site immediately.

When doing your research for the best keyword phrases to use, you should consider those with a rating of between 1,000-5,000. Any less will not garner enough traffic, and any more will give you too much competition.

When trying to come up with the best keywords/phrases try to think about what your visitors may be looking for. Take the suggestions offered in the keyword research tools you are using and expand on them. For instance, if they suggest ‘buy dog food’, consider also ‘purchase dog food’ or ‘food for dogs’. Use synonyms to get more choices as well. The Thesaurus on your word processing program can help you get other suggestions as well.

When you are including articles as content for your website, be sure to include the keyword phrases you want to target throughout the article. But (and this is important!) do not over-use the keywords because search engines will not like that. Using a particular keyword or phrase three or four times in one article is enough.

Finding the right keywords and phrases in your website content can be a tricky business. But by doing a bit of research and using a little imagination, you have a good chance of finding the keywords that will work for you.
