One of the biggest challenges in developing a profitable website business is getting traffic to your website. Without traffic your online business will inevitably fail. Traffic is essential because the more people that visit your website, the more chance of you getting a customer for your online product or service—and customers equal money for you.

The trick that stumps most new website owners is how to get that all-important traffic. There are several ways to increase the number of people that visit your website.

1. You can buy traffic in a couple of different ways.

You can purchase ads from a source like Google Adsense using the keyword approach. This is the ‘pay-per-click’ method. You buy keywords related to your website and each time a person clicks on your ad, you pay Google whatever cost you bid for that particular keyword.

There are other companies that have a per-per-click system besides Google. For example Marchex Adhere at http://www.marchex.com or Bidvertise (a company offering different pay-per-click advertisers) at http://www.bidvertiser.com or Silver Scope Promotion at http://silverscopepromotion.com just to name a few. There are many others and you simply can search by typing in the search words “pay per click websites” to get other suggestions.

You can also buy website traffic from one of the website traffic markets. How these work is that you pay a set price for so many hits on your website, according to your target audience. The prices for these hits range from very cheap (for example, $6.99 for 15,000 hits at http://www.webtrafficewholesale.com) to very expensive (for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars) so you can find a plan to suit any advertising budget you may have. You do need to read the fine print carefully though, as some companies are better than others at delivering the hits. You want unique visitors so be sure to check how the visitors are counted.

You can also use contextual advertising. Here you buy advertising that is imbedded in content ads or articles. Keywords or phrases that you choose are highlighted and when an interested visitor clicks on those keywords they are directed to your site. This type of advertising can attract more people who have an interest in what you are selling and can therefore lead to more business for you.

2. Another way to get traffic to your website is through linking. You exchange links with other websites. When a visitor on another website clicks on your link they are directed to your website and vice versa. The best links for you to use on your website are links to websites that have something in common with what your website is all about. This is known as relevant linking and tends to help you gain a higher ranking with the search engines.

3. In order to get repeat traffic to your website, and ones who have an interest in your topic, you can capture visitor’s information using an on-line form. By offering visitor’s free stuff (like a free newsletter, on-topic articles, software, e-books, etc.) you can often get them to give you their e-mail address. Then you can follow up with them for new items that you may be offering, or new information, etc. so that they visit your website again. Each time a person re-visits your website, you have a better chance of turning them into a customer.

4. Another way for you to attract visitors to your website is by submitting articles for article directories. With the article you submit, you include a link back to your website. Then when people read your article, they are directed back to you as the source—and to your website. (As a tip, you can use PLR packages as a base for articles—and rework them to make them unique to submit to the article directories.)

5. If you want your website to gain popularityget the word out. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. Toot your own horn and don’t be afraid to promote your new web project.

6. You can also use off-line advertising to attract visitors for your website. Give your business card to everyone you meet, including a few to friends and relatives to give away. Buy ads in newspapers or put up ads on notice boards around your community listing your website as a new source for your product or service.

7. Having great content on your website is a sure way to attract visitors. The web is a source of information for many people, and if people are happy with the information you provide, they are sure to return again and again. But constantly changing and adding content to your website can sometimes be a challenge. That is where you can benefit from PLR packages. You can purchase PLR articles to quickly and cheaply add content to your website that will satisfy your visitor’s needs.

The above are just a few ways that you can attract traffic to your website. Attracting visitors does take time and effort, but in the end the work you put into it will pay off. The more traffic you have, the more successful your website will become.
