If you want to get sales for your website products, it is safe to say that you need to know who your customers are. Only by knowing your customer demographics will you be able to target the right keywords to attract those customers. You must do a bit of research to learn about the people who will buy your products.
You may think that because you have an interest in your website niche that you are the right target market for your product. That is only partly true. Perhaps you are selling fishing lures, for instance. You may be an avid fisherman and know the sport inside and out, so you target the other avid fishermen looking to buy fishing lures. But aren't you leaving out another portion of your market that may be looking to fish only sometimes recreationally? What about cottagers that may be looking for fishing lures to enhance their cottage vacation experience? How about fathers who may be wanting to bond with their children with a fishing experience? Of course, these are only a few examples of markets you may be missing out on.
You need to research the commonly used keywords for your niche. You need to be creative as well, and come up with search words that you may not have thought of before. For instance (again with the fishing lure example) one of your present keywords could include 'bass fishing lures', but how about 'children's fishing lures' or 'fishing equipment for children', or even possibly 'learning to fish'?
There are many programs that you can use (like Yahoo or Google) that will tell you how many hits a particular keyword gets, and some programs will even suggest keywords and phrases that you may not have thought of before.
If you do a little research into what your market is now, and what you could expand it to be, you will find that you can increase your sales as well. After all, getting targeted traffic to your site will sell your product faster.
